INNSBRUCK-THE BRIDGES

Innsbruck – the bridges

The oldest bridge in the city is the Inn Bridge. It was built in 1171 and gave the city its name. Until the Mühlauer Bridge was built in 1581, it was of enormous economic importance for Innsbruck, as it was the only way for all traders to transport their goods from north to south. They had to pay bridge tolls, which filled the city treasury considerably. There are a total of 15 bridges in Innsbruck, with the rest of the bridges only being expanded from the second half of the 19th century. Today's most famous bridge is the Europa Bridge. From Innsbruck, the Europa Bridge is the heart of the Austrian Brenner Autobahn A 13 and the highest bridge in Austria. At a height of 190 m above ground, it was the highest bridge in Europe for around 10 years when it was completed in 1963. Its tallest pier was the tallest bridge pier in the world at 146.5 m.
