CITY OF INNSBRUCK

Innsbruck is the capital of the federal state of Tyrol, the heart of the Alps in western Austria. With around 300,000 inhabitants and 30,000 students, Innsbruck is the most populous city in Tyrol and the fifth largest city in Austria. The name Innsbruck refers to the bridge over the Inn. The city's landmark is the Golden Roof. Innsbruck is known for its imperial buildings and modern architecture. The Nordkette cable car, whose futuristic stations were designed by the architect Zaha Hadid, takes you from the city center to an altitude of up to 2,256 m. There is a popular ski area in winter, and in the warmer months you can go hiking or mountaineering here. Around 30,000 students attend the Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck, which was founded in 1669 and is the largest educational and research institution in western Austria. Holidaymakers have a wide choice of accommodation in Innsbruck - from elegant hotels to cozy guesthouses in and around the city or hut accommodation in the mountains around Innsbruck. The provincial capital of Tyrol also offers its guests a wide range of culinary, cultural and sporting activities. The heart of Innsbruck is the historic old town, surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape. The old town with its golden roof is also a great shopping center with numerous cafes and pastry shops. In summer and winter, Innsbruck is a paradise for hikers and outdoor-active locals and tourists.
